In 1978, EMI issued a famous set of LPs called Schubert Lieder on Record, 1898-1952, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Schubert's death. The set has just made its first appearance on CD to celebrate the bicentenary of his birth. Patrick O'Connor picks his way through this treasure trove of Schubert singing, including performances by Harry Plunket Greene, Charles Panzera, Vanni-Marcoux and Gerhard Husch.

Opera Company and their premiere of Britten's Peter Grimes in 1945 - the first opera staged by the company on their return to London after the Second World War. Melville recalls the preparations for the performance and working with Peter Pears and Joan Cross on what became the first British opera to gain a foothold in the international repertoire since Purcell's Dido and Aeneas.

Terzetto for Flute, Oboe and Viola

The first of the four operas in Wagner's The Ring of the Nibelung. Alberich steals the magic
Rhinegold from the Rhinemaidens, in the knowledge that he who forges a ring from it can rule the world. The ring is snatched from Alberich (who curses it) by Wotan, king of the gods, who in turn gives it to the giants
Fasolt and Fafner. They built Valhalla (a castle for the gods), and in return were promised Freia, goddess of youth, but they agreed to accept the gold instead. But they do not realise the power of the cursed ring, and in a struggle for its possession Fafner kills Fasolt. As the gods process into Valhalla, the Rhinemaidens lament the loss of the gold.
