Opera Company and their premiere of Britten's Peter Grimes in 1945 - the first opera staged by the company on their return to London after the Second World War. Melville recalls the preparations for the performance and working with Peter Pears and Joan Cross on what became the first British opera to gain a foothold in the international repertoire since Purcell's Dido and Aeneas.
