I Was There

on BBC Radio 3

Richard Fawkes meets five people who bring to life great musical events and celebrities of the past.
3: Alan Melville recalls his time as chorus master of the Sadler's Wells
Opera Company and their premiere of Britten's Peter Grimes in 1945 - the first opera staged by the company on their return to London after the Second World War. Melville recalls the preparations for the performance and working with Peter Pears and Joan Cross on what became the first British opera to gain a foothold in the international repertoire since Purcell's Dido and Aeneas.
