In the fourth of six programmes, Alun Morgan recalls Hines's activities in the 50s, when he was involved mainly with the more traditional side of jazz, first with Louis Armstrong and the All-Stars Band, then with his own Dixieland Band at the Hanover Club in San Francisco. Dick Witts interviews Karlheinz Stockhausen on how technology has changed the role of the composer. Stockhausen's experiments helped give today's ambient techno composers a musical language, and today the tape produced by scientists that led him to begin work in their new electronic music studio is heard on radio for the first time.
