Dregs from the Popish Dunghill
In the third part of this monthly history of British music, Roderick Swanston considers the extremes of religious taste in the troubled years between 1540 and 1620 and explains how the music of Thomas Tallis ,
William Byrd and Orlando Gibbons kept up with - or out of the way of - the successive occupants of the English throne.

Westminster Abbey Choir New London Consort, conductor Martin Neary
Three hundred years to the day after Queen Mary's funeral in Westminster
Abbey, a concert of music associated with her life: the rejoicing surrounding her coronation, laments on her death and the solemn music of her funeral. Henry Purcell was organist at
Westminster Abbey in 1695 and played a large part in her funeral ceremony, though within the year he himself was laid to rest.
With anthems and songs by Purcell, funeral sentences by Morley and funeral marches by Paisible and Tollett. Introduced by Nicholas Kenyon.
