On 12 March 1945, much of the Vienna State Opera
House was destroyed by bombing. In the first of three programmes marking the fiftieth anniversary of the event, Richard Osbome recalls the struggles and triumphs of the company in the decade before the opening of the rebuilt house in 1955. With reminiscences from the great soprano Sena Jurinac and music from operas by Mozart and Strauss sung by Maria Reining , Sena Jurinac , Hans Hotter , Elisabeth Schwarzkopf ,
