Mendelssohn Symphony No 4, in A (Italian)
(An Arts Council concert given on 4 October at Monmouth School for Boys) BBC Wales
The artistic association between that great French patron of music, the Princess Edmond de Polignac , and the Spanish composer Manuel de Falla , at first sight looks rather improbable. But the dynamism of the Princess inspired the reserved, even austere composer to write for her one of his warmest works, Master Peter 's Puppet Show. We hear of its prolonged gestation, and of the circumstances surrounding its eventual birth. And in today's programme, it has an unlikely bedfellow: Cole Porter 's ballet, Within the Quota.
