Prokofiev - first Russian period
In May 1918, Prokofiev left Russia for 15 years of exile, seemingly unable to come to terms with the Revolution. Yet some of his scores from before this departure are nothing if not forward-looking. Others, of which the Classical Symphony Is the archetype, are the reverse, revealing a characteristically Russian vein of lyricism. This week's programmes explore the unexpected dualism of his early Russian years.
