Largely because of this secrecy, all kinds of extravagant accusations are made about the Masons - that they dominate the nation's business life, or that they conspire together to manipulate local politics or commerce.
Robert Foxcroft looks at the masonic movement in Britain today, and in particular examines the widely held myths about its activities. Is it a religion, as some think, or a secret society, or merely a rather well-heeled social club? What is the attraction that keeps so many men 'on the square'?
