Alec Dickson the founder of Voluntary Service Overseas, saw the need for a comparable service in Britain to enable young people to respond to problems right across the social spectrum. The result was Community Service Volunteers. Since then, 20.000 young people, whose average age is 18, have both given and gained in situations which would daunt the professionally qualified adult.
