TODAY'S CHOICES
The Grand National
from 12.15pm BBC1
Saturday's Grandstand is dominated by coverage of the Aintree meeting that includes the 151st Grand National at 3.45pm: 30 fences over four-and-a-half miles, the world's most famous steeplechase. There's also news of the weekend's FA Cup semi-finals but, frankly, they will pale in comparison.
Today is the day that the closet punters emerge from the woodwork to place a once-a-year bet (a total of some £65 million), in the hope of winning on some ludicrous outsider. It's a great day. Sadly, there will be no Peter O'Sullevan, now retired; Jim McGrath assumes his duties. Ante-post joint favourites with one bookmaker at the time of writing are Him of Praise and Suny Bay. But who knows what will happen?
