All the magic of a favourite fairytale is brought to life in this classic Christmas ballet, which tells the story of a girl transported to a magical world on Christmas Eve. In Peter Wright's acclaimed production, the familiar Tchaikovsky score is matched with spectacular stage effects and world class dancing from the Birmingham Royal Ballet. The story begins at the Stahlbaum's Christmas party, where young Clara (Sandra Madgwick) is given a Nutcracker doll by the mysterious Drosselmeyer (Joseph Cipolla). Later that night, Clara creeps downstairs to find the Christmas tree growing and the Nutcracker Prince brought to life. The Royal Ballet's Russian star Irek Mukha 'medov joins the Birmingham company as a guest to partner Japanese ballerina Miyako Yoshida, playing the Sugar Plum Fairy.

Barry Norman selects his personal choice from more than 200 films seen during 1994. Spielberg finally received recognition from his peers and Tom Hanks won an Oscar. Schindler's List, Four Weddings and a Funeral, and Pulp Fiction are a few of his short-listed recommendations. This year has also seen a resurgence of film-making activity in Britain and more people attending the cinema. Interspersed with Barry's over-view of the cinema world are occasional surprises and funny moments from the year's films.
