The controversial issue of surrogacy is featured tonight as Joan Bakewell returns with a new series of documentaries taking a balanced look at ethical issues.
The question posed in the programme is " Do we have a right to have children?" Although commercial surrogacy is against the law, there is nothing to stop a couple making a private arrangement with a woman to bear a child for them.
Not everyone believes that surrogacy is acceptable. Medical ethicist Dr David Cook is uneasy at the notion that the womb is an incubator to be loaned out. Others believe that the industry should be regulated to prevent things from going wrong.
