John Ford
Conclusion of the two-part profile, which is accompanied by a BBCtv season of the American director's movies.
His work is often characterised by a love of wide open spaces such as Monument Valley in Arizona and a vivid evocation of the epic spirit that helped to build America.
After the Second World War,
Ford continued his remarkable career with films such as They Were Expendable, My Darling Clementine, the famous
"cavalry trilogy" and The Quiet
Man, for which he won yet another Oscar.
British film director and Ford expert Lindsay Anderson , who narrates the programme, gives his own critical appraisal and discusses his long friendship with a man he describes as "one of the great poets of humanity in our time".
James Stewart ,
Maureen O'Hara , Benjohnson, Harry Careyjr and grandson and biographer Dan Ford are among those who talk about Ford's later career.
