Steven Redgrave and Matthew Pinsent powered to victory in the coxless pairs and, with their emotional cox Garry Herbert , brothers Jonny and Greg Searle took the coxed pairs gold. And an unexpected cycling gold was won by Chris Boardman on his revolutionary "superbike".
Elsewhere, Nigel Mansell finally won the World Drivers' Championship, with a record-breaking nine Grand Prix wins, and the ever-consistent golfer Nick Faldo took his second
Open title. England's cricket team lost the World Cup final to Pakistan but gained one-day revenge in the summer;
Will Carling 's England rugby union side secured their second successive Grand Slam; boxers Lennox Lewis and Frank Bruno both boosted their world heavyweight title prospects; evergreen jockey
Lester Piggott , now 57, took a tumble in America but vowed to return to the saddle, and at Wimbledon, Andre Agassi upstaged them all.
