The year of 1991 began with the world waiting for Operation Desert Storm and ended with Yugoslavia in tatters. In the months in between, hardliners in the Soviet Union tried to overthrow Gorbachev, and Boris Yeltsin emerged as an unlikely saviour. At home the Birmingham Six and the Tottenham Three were released after police evidence was discredited, and new Prime Minister John Major had to wrestle with the NHS, Europe - and Mrs Thatcher. It was also the year of a Japanese cultural invasion and Pavarotti in Hyde Park. A retrospective look at the main events of 1991, as reported by the BBC's news and current affairs team.
