Then, as the industrial revolution gathered momentum, the factories were built, the cities exploded and the foundations of a complex modern society were laid. 1945 brought the promise of full employment to this industrial world-a promise kept until the late 1970s. But with unemployment now rising towards 31 million and with much new investment going to technologies which displace human labour and skill, many believe we are witnessing another profound transformation, to the ' post-industrial society'
