by Anton Chekhov
English version by Trevor Griffiths
From a translation by Helen Rappaport
Starring Judi Dench

Chekhov's last play, written in 1903, a comedy, though full of foreboding. He clearly sensed that revolution was shortly to put an end to privileged, protected ways of life, and wrote with full sympathy for people facing these events, while also expressing a great optimism and excitement about the possibilities of the future.
