The second of ten case studies in multi-cultural education for discussion by teachers.
Should teachers seek to draw out from pupils any family history of migration, in order to get to know the children as individuals and to share in class the different cultural backgrounds they bring into school? Can they build on different dialects and languages children may have? Is it important to discuss the children's experience and perceptions of racism in the community? This film shows how and why teachers from four ethnically mixed primary schools have responded to these questions. Film editor MONICA MEAD Director TOM ROBERTS
Producer JOHN TWITCHIN

Seventeen years ago Kath Spencer was paralysed and dying. Then her friends secretly raised the money to send her to Lourdes. She went there in a wheelchair and walked back. In tonight's programme Kath and the friends who sent her on her miraculous pilgrimage tell Geoffrey Wheeler their story.
Said Kath : ' I was in a ward with 27 other sick people and when I was cured and able to move again not one of them said I wish it was me-they just thanked God because they were so happy for me.'
Choirs and congregations from all West Bridgford's churches gather together in St Giles' Church to sing Kath's hymn choice and those of other local people.
Christ is our cornerstone (Harewood); Lord of all hopefulness (Slane); Rejoice. the Lord is King (Gopsal); At the name of Jesus (Camberwell); Thou God of truth and love (St Godric); Great is thy faithfulness; Immaculate Mary (Lourdes); Sing we the King who is coming to reign (The Glory Song) Organist WALTER ESSWOOD

Three weeks ago Professor Sir Bernard Lovell retired as Director of the radio astronomy observatory at Jodrell Bank, where the 250-foot 'dish' opened up new methods of studying the universe; its design and its setting-up were due almost entirely to Sir Bernard, and in this programme he talks to Patrick Moore about the story of Jodrell Bank as well as his hopes for the future of astronomy.
