Franklin Schaffner 's fine film is a far cry from the usual Hollywood saga of the Middle Ages; his direction, an intelligent script and some masterly colour photography combine to produce an entirely convincing re-creation of a distant period and people. As the war lord, Charlton Heston gives one of his best performances.
