A series about four countries who live next door to the Soviet Union. 3-Finland
The Finnish border with the Soviet Union is the longest of any
European country. It runs through
00 miles of forests, lakes and marshes. Twice in this century the Russians have crossed that border.
So Finland has been forced to be friends with The Bear Next Door
Now Russia supplies two-thirds ot her oil and a nuclear power station Thousands of Finns cross the border every day to work in factories built by Finnish firms.
Tn military terms, the relationship is bizarre. All of Finland's tanks and half her fighters are supplied by the Soviet Union. The friendship treaty between the two countries calls for the Finns to side with the Russians in case of a NATO attack through their territory.
Is democratic Finland truly independent - or just living on a Soviet licence? Is she neutral - or neutered? Jeremy Paxman reports.
