For the fifth time the ' Open ' comes to Royal Birkdale Golf Club on the Lancashire coast. Scene of many great matches, Royal Birk dale remembers the tenacity of Arnold Palmer when he won in 1961. In the third round, on the 16th hole, he played his ball from a seemingly impossible lie in scrub to within inches of the pin. A plaque on the spot commemorates this feat.
In the final round in 1971 Lee Trevino found trouble at the 17th, hitting his tee shot into the sand-hill and taking seven for the hole. He won however from the irrepressible Mr Lu of Taiwan, who proved the winner in the popularity stakes.
Can the younger golfers retain the title won on their behalf by Tom Watson last year? The American challenge is extremely strong, with JOHNNY MILLER , BEN CRENSHAW , HUBERT GREEN and HALE IRWIN leading the field. But past champions will not let go easily and GARY PLAYER (South Africa), TOM WEISKOPF (USA) and the legendary JACK NICKLAUS are all determined to regain the cup and with it the £7,500 top prize.

On the day of Olympic Selection a candid, informal look at HRH Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips training in preparation for places in the Three-day Event Equestrian team for Montreal.
Jackie Stewart, three times World Motor Racing Champion, spent two days with the Royal couple as they went through their training routine - a routine which lasts from dawn to dusk. Trying to prepare for the Olympics (in between Royal engagements for the Princess and being a full-time soldier, as is Captain Phillips) stretches their ingenuity to the utmost.
To quote PRINCESS ANNE 'when I first started competing I was just the jockey - now it's different - really have to muck in.' Mucking in means driving the horsebox, stable management, cleaning and cossetting her horses and competing at the highest level with all the pressures that brings. Reporter JACKIE STEWART

Humboldt was a genius. He was the father of modern geography and the first truly scientific explorer. He was an aristocrat with money but by the time he had completed his travels he Was broke. But rarely has a private fortune been so well spent. On his journey through Venezuela he studied giant electric eels for the first time; he brought back the deadly Indian poison curare; he collected thousands of plant specimens never before seen in Europe; and he proved conclusively that there was a natural waterway linking the Amazon and Orinoco rivers. Calaracts, disease, dangerous wild animals - Humboldt faced them all with courage and intense curiosity.
This series has provided some of the viewing highlights of the year.
