Why is it so important to conserve endangered species of wild and domestic breeds? Michael Rodd finds out as he explores the animal world around Britain. Otters are, perhaps, Philip Wayre 's favourite animals, but at Norfolk Wildlife Park he claims to have the largest specialist collection of European mammals and birds in the country - from Alpine ibex to Eagle owls - and a record of outstanding breeding successes that has never been beaten.
Joe Henson , at Cotswold Farm Park, a member of the recently formed Rare Breeds Survival Trust, is concerned with preserving historic breeds of livestock - the Soay, Jacob, and Manx Loghtan sheep; the tremendous Longhorn and tiny Dexter cattle; and pigs like the Gloucester Old Spot which used to make your bacon taste of cider.

But DDT is also attacked as the darkest threat of the Silent Spring. It is accused of dealing indiscriminate death to fish and birds and of being a cause of cancer in man. As a spearhead issue of the environmental revolution it has been judged in the courtrooms of America - and banned.
Is it safe to use DDT anywhere in the world? And just how valid is the evidence brought against it?
