Palace Cinema, Birmingham
Ernest Alden , the popular organist of the West End Cinema, Birmingham, came to that cinema in 1927, became resident organist a few months later, and has stayed there ever since. At the age of fourteen he was assistant organist at Chelsea Old Church, and remained there from 1919 until 1924. He began his career as a cinema organist a year later at Wood Green, and later spent a few months as theatre organist at the Empire, Mile End.

There can be few speakers more qualified to discuss the function of the dramatic critic than Desmond MacCarthy. As most listeners know, he has formerly done a great deal of broadcasting on literary subjects. This evening he will examine the standards which a competent critic should set himself, and he will draw a firm line between good and bad criticism.
