This is the first of two talks in which the speaker is going to discuss aspects of America in which he is particularly interested. Today he is going to tell listeners about the ' cow country ' of Texas, as it is now and as once it was.
Cedric Belfrage has been living in Hollywood for some years writing books. He was at one time film and dramatic critic of The Daily Express, and was a familiar voice on the air when he gave his regular BBC film talks. He is the author of a number of books of travel, a new one of which, dealing with the Negroes in the Southern States of America, is to be published shortly.

8.28 Lento assai and Vivace (String
Quartet in F, Op. 135)
Beethoven's last group of five string quartets is generally acknowledged to be the crowning achievement of his life's work and the highest point to which the string quartet has been brought. Beethoven began work on them in the summer of 1824 and completed them in November, 1826, about four months before he died. Despite the fact that these quartets were conceived for four solo instruments, the nature of the music of some of the movements, such as the Grosse Fuge , lends itself to the medium of a string orchestra.
The two movements to be heard this evening from the Quartet in F, Op. 135, which was written in 1826 and is virtually Beethoven's last completed work, are the third and second movements respectively.
