On the eve of Constantinople being taken by the Turks in 1453, it was said by Constantine. the last Emperor of the Eastern Empire : ‘ God forbid that I should live an Emperor without an Empire. As my city falls, I will fall with it.'
Today's broadcast tells you how
Constantinople, which had been the capital of a great Christian empire, fell at last into the hands of invaders from the East-the Mahommedan Turks. You will hear how the Turkish Sultan, Mahommed the Conqueror, captured the city, and what happened to Constantine, the last Emperor.

‘Nature Sanctuaries'

The bison in America was nearly exterminated, but it has been saved, and bison now live in a nature sanctuary in Canada. There are other such sanctuaries for large animals in different parts of the world. In Britain we have many bird sanctuaries. There is a new spirit in the world which seeks to keep wild animals from being exterminated. Some birds are protected by law partly because they help the farmer, partly because they sing and are beautiful. Fishes are protected for food and for sport. Birds, too-for instance, pheasants and partridges. This is an outline of the talk that Munro Fox is to give today.

If the tragic Symphony No. 1, in. C minor, was a great success on its first appearance, Symphony No. 2, in D, with its happier and more idyllic feelings, was an even greater one. Although conceived on just as big a scale as the C minor Symphony, the texture of the music is actually very much clearer, the melodies more cantabile in character, and the whole spirit of the music brighter-it has been called Brahms's ' Pastoral ' Symphony.
