Under the direction of Johan Hock from Queen's College Chambers
Lecture Hall, Birmingham
The Birmingham Philharmonic
String Orchestra
Leader, Norris Stanley
Conducted by Arthur Catterall
Tchaikovsky's Serenade for string orchestra, written in October, 1880, at about the same time as the '1812' Overture, was one of his own favourite works. It was one of the two he chosfe to conduct for his London debut on March 22, 1888.
The bustling, clear-cut first movement, the beautiful elegy, and the haunting waltz are certainly among his most delightful inspirations. 'Both the melody of the slow introduction to the finale and the first theme of the finale proper are Russian folk songs, the first another Volga boatmen's song, the second a merry dance song.
