An appeal on behalf of THE FRIENDS OF THE POOR by the Hon. Mrs. SYDNEY MARSHAM,
O.B.E.
Behind the quiet exterior of 42, Ebury Street work is continuously being done to help thousands of men and women, ineligible for various reasons for the more obvious channels of relief; for instance, the working classes hit by unusual circumstances, the sick and crippled, the old who are very poor, and educated people who through misfortune find themselves faced with poverty in their declining years.
More than 58,000 families have sought and found help from the Friends of the Poor.

Under Twenty v. Over Forty
A match between teams drawn from various parts of the British Isles
Spelling Master, F.H. Grisewood

Following the two transatlantic competitions broadcast during the last few weeks, two more Spelling Bees have been arranged, one for this evening and the other for April 3. This evening's match is between the 'Under the Twenties' and the 'Over Forties'. Each team will consist of seven, and each BBC Region has been asked to send one representative for each side. All the spellers will be in a studio at Broadcasting House, London, and there will be one Spelling Master conducting the competition. Apart from this, the rules will be the same as those adopted for the previous Spelling Bees and they are summarised below

1. The words to be spelt are given to the first member of one team then to the first member of the other, and so on.
2. If a word is spelt right, the speller gains a point for his side. If a word is mis-spelt, a gong is sounded and the word is then given to the corresponding member of the other side.
3. Each speller is allowed thirty seconds to answer and is entitled to ask for a definition.
4. The winning side is that which has scored the most points at the end of the match.
