Tracing History Backwards—5a ' East and West'
STEPHEN KING-HALL
Japan is the most powerful Eastern competitor that European industrialists have to face. Commander
Stephen King-Hall 's talk-the script will be read by Ralph Arnold-deals largely with the problems arising from Japan's industrialisation. King-Hall's views are unorthodox. He thinks there is a great deal of alarmist nonsense talked about Japanese competition, for instance ; and suggests that the difficulties of Eastern and Western co-operation for the common good arc not so formidable as many experts believe.

Spring Butterflies
RICHARD MORSE
The appearance of the first butterflies of the year is one of the most welcome signs of the Spring. The coming of a warm, sunny day at this season is fairly certain to bring tortoiseshells, brimstones, and peacocks from their winter retreats ; and other kinds will soon follow.
This afternoon Richard Morse will speak of the interesting lives and habits of these early butterflies. He will tell where they have spent the winter, and how their springtime activities can be observed and understood ; and he will explain why some of these insects are welcomed by the gardener, whilst others are often viewed with alarm.
The value and interest of the talk will be enhanced if teachers can display pictures of the species mentioned, and also of the very familiar white butterflies of our parks and gardens.

Conductor, GEORGE WALTER
The polonaise in Boris Godunov is a piece of music with an eventful history.
It had no place in the ' original' Boris of 1868-9, but was inserted with the rest of the so-called ' Polish act' in the second version, and was played as a concert piece in April, 1872, two years before the opera itself was staged. Rimsky-Korsakov tells us that Mussorgsky originally scored the polonaise almost entirely for strings, with some curious idea of suggesting Louis XIV's celebrated ' Vingt-quatre violons du roi '.
It was completely unsuccessful in this form and Mussorgsky re-scored it in 1874, before the production of the opera. However, Rimsky-Korsakov still considered his friend's orchestration ineffective ; in 1889 he re-scored the polonaise himself, and this led in turn to his drastic revision of the whole of Mussorgsky's opera, which has since been so bitterly attacked.

A Programme of Irish Music and Speech
(From Northern Ireland)
Lynn Doyle and Mat Mulcaghey are two names that breathe the very spirit of Ireland. It is therefore fitting that these two should play the leading parts in this Irish miscellany to honour St. Patrick's Day. Lynn Doyle is well known for his literary works and his previous broadcasts ; Mat Mulcaghey, the Ould Besom man from Co. Tyrone, needs no introduction to Irish listeners. Irish music is represented, among other things, by compositions of Herbert Hughes , and by an arrangement for full orchestra of an Irish jig.

' Great Britain's Place in World Aviation'
Group Captain W. H. PRIMROSE , D.F.C.
Group Captain W. H. Primrose , a retired officer of the R.A.F., will deal mainly with the civil side of Britain's place in world aviation. He will discuss, amongst other things, the advantages and disadvantages of a state subsidy, and the possibility of the inauguration of new air routes. Primrose was the first man to be employed for advice on aeronautical matters by the Post Office, where, until only a short while ago, he held the post of Air Mail Adviser. He has had a distinguished career in the air It was he, for example, who piloted the escort aeroplane for Bonar Law when the latter took Lloyd's George's message to King George on the signing of the Treaty of Versailles.
