'The Grand National'
F. C. HITCHCOCK , M.C.
Next Friday, at Aintree, is to be run one of the best-known races in the world, for the result of the Grand National is as eagerly awaited in remote corners of the earth as the result of the Derby. Today Captain F. C. Hitchcock , who has trained jumpers himself and is the author of the well-known book on horses and riding, ' Saddle Up ', is to talk about the race and the course and some of the horses that will be competing.
Listeners will hear all about those formidable and celebrated jumps-Becher's Brook and Valentine's ; and what is more important, and the more i extraordinary in view of the size of the obstacles and the frequency of falls, they will learn that no jockey has lost his life in the last twenty-five years and not more than two horses have lost theirs in the last ten years.
The National is for horses of six years old and upwards, all tried jumpers and stayers, for a horse must have finished in the first three in a steeplechase of three miles or upwards, worth £200 to the winner, before he is eligible to compete.
