The Practice and Science of Gardening-9
' The Cultivation of Flowers'
F. W. COSTIN , N.D.H., F.R.H.S.
This month, throughout April, and even in May, a wide range of hardy flowers may be sown in the open garden, from tiny white alyssum and coloured dwarf candytufts to summer chrysanthemums, lupins, and graceful annual larkspurs. The culture of some of these will be dealt with in the talk.
Some flowers, however, do not come true to colour and type from seed, and it is necessary to raise these by other means ; for instance, by cutting and layers. Plants needing such treatment, and the methods to be adopted in order to propagate them, will be described,'as will also some types of flowering plants specially suited to small spaces.

Razumovsky Quartets played by THE BROSA STRING QUARTET:
Antonio Brosa (violin) ; Norman Chappie (violin); Leonard Rubens (viola) ; Livio Mannucci (violoncello) String Quartet in E minor (Op. 59,
No. 2)
I. Allegro ; 2. Molto adagio
' If one may say that Haydn created the String Quartet as an art form ', says Joseph de Marliave in his monumental volume on Beethoven's Quartets, ' Beethoven achieved even greater attainment than his predecessor in the quartets of Op. 59, revealing the expressive capacity latent in the genre to an extent never dreamed of by earlier musicians. It is for this reason primarily that these three quartets have so deep a significance. Beethoven's mature period of creative work is characterised by two main features, first, the prime importance of the musical idea, secondly, the ' construction of the development..... The quality underlying the Op. 59 quartets is their psychological objectivity. Although he possessed an inexhaustible source of inspiration within himself, Beethoven here portrays objectively the joys and sorrows of the outside world. If one compares Op. 59 with the Op. 127 quartet from this aspect the contrast is immediately apparent. In Op. 59 he gives to the world a proof of his limitless capacity for expression, within the compass of the four lines of melody ; but in the later quartets he writes in pure introspective revelation, caring little whether the world understands him or not

This musical drama is a genuine murder mystery of the same school as the film Murder at the Vanities-the murder taking place in a dressing-room at a theatre while a musical comedy is being performed. The singing parts are those of the leading actress in the musical comedy, played by Tessa Deane , who broadcast recently with such success in The Student Prince, and that of the juvenile lead, played by Clarence Wright , who broadcast in Ernest Longstaffe 's pantomime this year as the Prince. In the cast are many other popular broadcasters.
Book, music, and lyrics are the original work of Bob Lively and Betty Laidlaw , who are well known for their work for stage and screen in America. Lively once broadcast over here on a Hying visit. Special arrangements for the orchestra and full revue chorus have been made by Max Saunders. The big number is ' Climbing up the Golden Stairs.'
' Death in the Dressing Room ' will be repeated in the Regional programme tomorrow at 7.45.
