In the past,just as today, changes in the ways of producing things, wars, foreign competition, and changes of fashion, caused people to be put out of work. This morning K. C. Boswell is to tell listeners about three periods of widespread unemployment-in the reign of Edward VI, in 1622, and between 1815 and 1830. Kenneth Boswell had a brilliant career at Oxford, which was interrupted by the war. He won an exhibition to Merton College in 1916, but was destined to serve in France with the Royal Garrison Artillery, to be taken prisoner in action, and to be transferred to Germany for the duration of the war before he could resume his studies at Oxford, where he took Honours in Modern History He was assistant master at Wellington for a year, then for five years senior history master at Gresham's School, Holt, Norfolk. In 1028, he joined the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, to create and develop a new department in Imperial and foreign affairs-a position he still holds

A scientific investigation by HARRY PRICE and F. H. GRISEWOOD into the alleged haunting of an old manor house. The investigators set the scene and describe their preparations

Any listener who has the idea that this is a ghost hunt with' a property-man clanking chains while an actor moans his way down a corridor should get the idea out of his head. The broadcast is a serious investigation to be carried out scientifically hy Harry Price, who has spent most of his life investigating the supernormal; and the BBC is to give opportunity in some measure for listeners to be present.
Tonight he, Frederick Grisewood
(who is to describe the environment and all that is going on), and various other people to the number of eight, are to sit round a table in the dining-room of an old manor house dating from the twelfth century, with the purpose of observing, hearing, and recording anything supernormal that may occur. There will be a microphone in an attic, and another in the cellar which, in particular, is alleged to he haunted.
It is said that muffled footsteps are heard, that the door of this cellar refuses to remain closed unless it is locked. A man who has known the house since he was a boy is to come to the microphone to tell the story. Every precaution has been taken, every preparation made ; doors and windows sealed, every mmate placed under observation in one room, every aid of science put in readiness— powdered graphite for fingerprints, powdered starch for footprints, electric contacts attached to doors, cameras and flashbulbs handy.
But listeners must not expect too much. The chances are that nothing will happen ; after all, it would be extraordinarily lucky if it did. And if nothing happens, it will merely mean that nothing has been proved for or against the manifestation of ghosts.
