It was the appearance of the first part of Hiawatha, in 1898, which spread
Coleridge-Taylor's fame all over the English-speaking world, and as it was the composer's first really important success, so it has remained the most popular of all his music. In its vivid and yet simple rhythm, its fresh and natural melody, and in the wan-nth of its orchestral treatment, the music is obviously ideally mated with Long-fellow's poem. The ' Wedding Feast' was first given alone, the second part, ' The Death of Minnehaha ', appearing a year later at a North Staffordshire Festival. ' Hiawatha's Departure ', which completes the trilogy, was first given by the Roya! Choral Society in London in the spring of 1900.

Overture, Richard III
In 1888, when Sir Edward German was twenty-six, he was engaged as Musical Director at the old Globe Theatre, which was then under the management of Richard Mansfield , a popular Shakespearean actor of those days. German was commissioned to write the incidental music to a new production of Richard III. The success of this music reached the ears of Henry Irving at the Lyceum Theatre, who when he wanted music for his gorgeous production of Henry VIII in 1892, looked no further than the young composer who had done so well with Richard III. From that moment German never looked back.
