Cherubini was born in 1760 at Florence. According to his own statement, he began ' to learn music at six and composition at nine.' When he was sixteen he had already composed a quantity of church music, including three Masses. An intensive study of old Italian polyphonic music occupied his attention for the next few years. Then he turned to opera and for fourteen years steadily wrote works that brought him fame throughout Europe.
In 1788 Cherubini made Paris his home. He directed the Italian Opera, became an ' Inspector of Studies ' at the Conservatoire and finally succeeded to the directorship. As a teacher, he exercised enormous power in Paris. He died in 1842. Cherubini did not write much chamber music : six string quartets, one string quintet, and two unpublished piano trios and a piece for string quartet complete the list. The E flat Quartet was written in 1814 and represents his first attempt. It is a finely conceived work, rich in melodic and rhythmic interest.
Dr. Ernest Walker, pianist, composer and writer on musical subjects, was educated at Balliol College. Oxford. As an examiner and teacher at the University, he has accomplished much important work. Dr. Walker has composed a great deal of fine music, most of which, unfortunately, is unpublished. The Fantasia in D for string quartet (published in 1922) is a distinguished piece of writing full of piquant effects.

The overture to Ruy Blas , Victor Hugo 's drama of that name. was written by Mendelssohn, when he was thirty and at the height of his career. He loathed the play and said so, but he composed the overture simply because the proceeds of the concert at which it was to be played were to be devoted to The Widows' Fund of the orchestra. Mendelssohn himself refused to call it anything else 'but the ' Overture to the Dramatic Fund '. In view of the fact that it is admittedly one of the most brilliant of his orchestral works, it seems hardly credible, but none the less true, that the whole thing was conceived and executed within a period between a Tuesday evening and a Friday morning, the Wednesday and Thursday of which seem to have been taken up with various occupations of another nature. The whole thing, then, must have been composed literally in a few hours.

The first and second edition of Sandy Powell 's Album were broadcast in June last year and February this year, and once again tonight the idea will be followed of linking up a few more of the sketches that the one and only Sandy has made famous on records and on the halls.
In tonight's Album, Sandy Powell , in one of his funniest impersonations, is to take the part of the stage doorkeeper at an imaginary big music hall. A young man calls for his best girl, who is a star on the bill, and as he waits for her, Sandy chatters away as only Sandy can.
Sandy relates how he once swam the Channel, and, hey presto ! listeners hear a sketch showing him doing it.....
Then, wouldn't the young man like to see one or two of the turns on the bill, though it is against regulations? they go through to. the stage, and promptly listeners hear the Radio Three, or Ernest Shannon , or some other favourite in their act. Then there are sketches showing how Sandy heenme a dentist, and how he went to Switzerland ... this Album number three should be easily the best yet.
