In a quite different mould from the first, this E 'minor quartet is always thought of as one of the most self-revealing of all Beethoven's movements. Presented in the traditional form of Haydn and Mozart, though with much more freedom and expressiveness, it may well be, as the world at large has always supposed, a musical picture of a struggle against hostile fate in which Beethoven himself is the striving spirit. More than once near the beginning, silent bars break the continuity of the melody-in Wagner's words, ' a silence as full of significance as sound '.
The slow movement is an unbroken stream of melody, and two different contemporaries of the master's have told us independently how he conceived it one night at Baden as he looked up at the sky and meditated on the great harmony of the stars. The third movement is neither scherzo nor minuet, but one of Beethoven's characteristic allegrettos built up on a curiously constructed rhythm that makes its effect largely by an accent on the second beat of the bar. It has an alternative section in the major key, in which the Russian theme appears. It is the same melody which Mussorgsky uses in the Coronation scene of Boris Godounov ; Rimsky-Korsakov has also introduced it in his opera The Tsar's Bride. The last movement, bold and triumphant, was considered, when it appeared, as the most brilliant quartet finale which had ever been written.

QUARTET
Quartet No. 3 (1916) Vilia Lobos
I. Allegro non troppo; 2. Molto vivo ; 3. Molto adagio; 4. Allegro con fuoco
Hector Villa-Lobos , son of a lawyer and keen amateur musician, was born at Rio de Janeiro in 1886. His early days appear to have been spent in a struggle against poverty, but by the time he reached the age of eighteen he had managed to acquire a thorough musical education. He began his professional career as a concert pianist, travelling the length and breadth of Brazil, giving recitals wherever serious music had a following.
Villa-Lobos's travels brought him into contact with folk-song, of which he made an intensive study and which has deeply influenced his style as a composer. Since 191 1 Villa-Lobos has established himself at Rio de Janeiro as the foremost composer, conductor, and pianist. His compositions, which are fairly numerous, show remarkable imagination, immense concentration, and powerful, though perhaps rather primitive, emotional appeal.
DIE HAGHE SANGHERS
(The Hague Singers)
Conductor, JOS. VRANKEN ,
Jr. HAROLD CRAXTON (pianoforte)
The Hague Singers, of fifty male voices (they have since been increased to a hundred), were formed in 1917. They are entirely an amateur organisation, the members being chiefly business men and craftsmen. Within a few years the excellent performances of the Hague Singers won wide recognition, and in 1920 they received the honour of royal patronage. Since that time the Hague Singers have taken part in many state celebrations.
The present conductor, Jos. Vranken,
Jr., belongs to a well-known Dutch family of musicians. Born in 1900 at Utrecht, he receivettet complete training in all branches of music. He is a ! con ductor of wide and varied experience and an excellent-organist, composer and writer on musical subjects.
An interesting feature of the Hague
Singers is their range of languages : they sing in English, French, Italian, German, Hungarian, Russian, Czech, and their repertoire extends from Palestrina to the moderns.
An Appeal on behalf of ST. MARTIN'S SUMMER HOLIDAY FUND by the Rev. PAT MCCORMICK , D.S.O.
The Holiday Fund was started many years ago by Dr. Sheppard, then Vicar of St. Martin-in-the-Fields. By means of it, both he and his successor there, the Rev. Pat McCormick , have been able to help many poor people to have a good holiday, and especially those who have seen better days and to whom a small gift of money makes all the difference ; sometimes it is just that little extra which makes the holiday a real one, especially for the children.
As the Vicar of ' the Church in Trafalgar Square Mr. McCormick comes in contact continually with people who need a gift of this kind, and he has very many he wants to help this year.
The work is done by voluntary helpers, and postage and so forth is paid from other sources, so there are no administrative expenses in connection with the Fund. Every penny given
' goes towards somebody's holiday.
Contributions will be gratefully acknowledged and should be addressed to [address removed].
