Overture, Richard III
In 1888, when Sir Edward German was twenty-six, he was engaged as Musical Director at the old Globe Theatre, which was then under the management of Richard Mansfield , a popular Shakespearean actor of those days. German was commissioned to write the incidental music to a new production of Richard III. The success of this music reached the ears of Henry Irving at the Lyceum Theatre, who when he wanted music for his gorgeous production of Henry VIII in 1892, looked no further than the young composer who had done so well with Richard III. From that moment German never looked back.
