Massenet's Thais is based upon Anatole France 's well-known story of early Christian times in Egypt. The ' Meditation ' occurs in the opera between the evening of the visit of the Monk Athanacl to the luxurious home of Thais, and the morning of her conversion and repentance.

THE B.B.C. ORCHESTRA
(Section E)
(Led by LAURANCE TURNER )
Conducted by JOSEPH LEWIS
The plays of Shakespeare, which by their nature call for incidental music, have always attracted composers, not only in England, but in Europe, as this programme tends to show.
Only one of these items is from an opera-Nicolai's Overture. The opera libretto in this case does not follow Shakespeare's text very closely, but the comedy spirit is given plenty of rein in the music.
Massenet's Suite is a series of studies unconnected either with opera or stage presentation.
The remainder of the items in the programme were in each case specially written for performance with stage productions. Sir Edward German 's Henry VIII music was written for a presentation of the play by Sir Henry Irving at the Lyceum Theatre in 1892. The incidental music included also the famous Henry VIII Dances , and this fortunate commission went far to make the name of the young composer.
Quilter's As You Like It music dates from 1922. His settings of the songs for the same production are continually sung, and are great favourites with singers.
Coleridge-Taylor's Othello music dates from 1911, when it was written for Sir Herbert Tree 's production of the play at His Majesty's Theatre.
