'Beethoven'
D. F. TOVEY , Mus.Doc.(Reid Professor of Music, Edinburgh University)
(From Edinburgh)
Professor Tovey's keyboard talks on Beethoven's pianoforte Sonatas are undoubtedly one of the most interesting and illuminating series of music talks that have been broadcast. Professor
Tovey takes the unique standpoint that sonata music is more dramatic than theatre music, and this idea has been his principal theme in the discussion, of the significance of Beethoven's sonatas.
Last week Professor Tovey dealt with Beethoven's enormous extension of the range of tonality, or harmony on a large scale, and the difference between modulations that mystify and modulations that define, and the consequences of these differences in dramatic expression. This evening Professor Tovey will give further illustrations of Beethoven's power of climax in harmony, and the mystery, humour, and tragedy implied in the music.

Conducted by KEITH DOUGLAS
Keith Douglas, whose first broadcast as a conductor this is, has been for some years Honorary Secretary of the Royal Philharmonic Society, a particularly onerous post. He has been for years conductor of the Bradford City Orchestra and has appeared on the rostrum with the Halle Orchestra. He is, too, an experienced conductor of opera and this season will see him as a conductor with the Carl Rosa Company. This arrangement for concert orchestra of Delius's ' Walk to a Paradise Garden', from his opera A Village Romeo and Juliet, is by Keith Douglas. Sali and Vreli, the unhappy Romeo and Juliet of the opera, go to a neighbouring fair, for the moment happy in each other's company. Anxious to be wholly alone, they leave the fair and walk to the Paradise Garden, which is the name of an Inn close by. The music describes their walk, and though the opera ends in tragedy, this little journey passes in serene and happy communion.
