Mr. ARTHUR BRYANT (Educational
Adviser, Bonar Law College, Ash-ridge) : ' The Yeoman Farmer '
Tonight Mr. Bryant deals with the third of the seven traditional British types which he is discussing in this series. He will show how the yeoman farmer was the chief inhabitant of the village community; a man of character, with a strong sense of independence : the head of a system of local self-government, in which the modern democratic system has its roots. Mr. Bryant fills in this composite portrait with quotations from Cobbett's ' Rural Rides ', from Goldsmith's ' Deserted Village ', and with extracts from his own large collection of private letters.
