ORCHESTRA
From the Town Hall,
Birmingham Delius 's Violin Concerto is dedicated to Albert Sammons , who was responsible for the editing of, and certain important alterations in, the solo part. As in the case of Eigar's Concerto, Sammons has made this concerto his own and he remains its greatest interpreter.
The Concerto is in one continuous movement which, however, splits up into three sections in contrasting tempi. The presentation and development of the thematic material, which is made up of a a number of short themes described by Sir Donald Tovey as a continuous ' stream of ruminating melody ', is very characteristic of the composer's highly individual and poeric style.
by William Shakespeare. Produced and adapted by Howard Rose
Perhaps the most popular of Shakespeare's historical plays, and certainly the most suitable for broadcasting in the week which includes St. George's Day, King Henry V is this afternoon presented by a powerful cast. However modern opinion may rate the motives which took the King to France, there is no question of his supreme courage and resolution when he got there ; and on these aspects of his hero's character Shakespeare concentrated a magnificence of poetic phrase which equals all but his own highest achievements elsewhere in the plays. Falstaff being dead. the undertow of comedy carries Fluellen to the foremost place among the minor characters. Most of the choruses have been retained, and the addition of a narrator's part simplifies the presentation.
