Horace Cole justly gained his crown as "King of Jokers", though practical joking was by no means his only interest. He was a keenly sensitive man, and particularly devoted to art and poetry. It is, however, of Cole, the great hoaxer, that Joseph Hone will speak this afternoon.
Cole perpetrated practical jokes without number. Some were small ones involving only his friends, but others were on a truly grand scale, involving in one case - which Joseph Hone will describe at length - the Foreign Office, the Admiralty, and half the British Fleet. The official reception at Weymouth by the Navy of four Abyssinian princes in 1910 must rank as the greatest hoax ever carried out.

Borodin's unfinished Symphony No. 3 in A minor was subjected to an unknown amount of tinkering at the not unsympathetic hands of Alexander Glazunov , who at any rate orchestrated the work delightfully. It is in two movements: the brilliant bustling scherzo in 5-8 time and the lovely little trio (based on material originally intended for the opera Prince Igor) were completed by Borodin-in a string quartet version included in the well-known collection of Russian quartet pieces, 1 Fridays '.
It is pleasant, lyrical, easy-going music-not to be compared, however, either intellectually or imaginatively, with the opening movements of Borodin's two earlier symphonies, but it possesses its own quiet charm.

Scene: The George
This is a revival of a play produced in the North some years ago. It tells the story of how five people, who were friends of an Indian Army colonel who had died in somewhat mysterious circumstances, receive telegrams asking them to meet the sender at an inn not far from the scene of the colonel's death.
Needless to say, talk among the five revolves round the death of the colonel. All of them had been with him at his house on the night he died. Then they discover that the inn where they are drinking has been closed for several weeks.
Who killed the colonel? A foolish slip by one of the five produces the answer to this question and the climax of the play.
