Symphony No. 2, in D played by the BBC Scottish Orchestra : conductor, Guy Warrack
Méhul began life as a cook and ended by being a composer of national fame. Opera and ballet were his chief concerns : he wrote over twenty operas, taking Gluck as- his model. At the age of forty-three M6hul came under the influence of Cherubini, with the result that he wrote a set
- of six symphonies. The No. 2 in D, which appeared in 1808, is a charming little work, characteristic of the period.
