The BBC Orchestra (Section B)
Leader, Paul Beard
Conducted by Julius Harrison
Beethoven's 'Consecration' Overture was composed for the opening of the Josephstadt Theatre in Vienna in 1822. The music, containing a fanfare and a fugue, is consequently rather ceremonial in form, though in spirit it is lively enough.
Two years later it was performed again, in the historic Karnthnerthor Theatre, Vienna, on May 7, 1824, when the greater part of the Mass in D and the Ninth Symphony were produced. The concert was promoted by a number of influential people in Vienna, including Prince Lichnowsky, and the enthusiasm of the audience was tremendous.

An appeal on behalf of King Haakon's Fund for Relief in Norway, by Admiral Sir Edward Evans , K.C.B., D.S.O. (Evans of the Broke)
This fund was launched at a Mansion House meeting on Friday,
May 17. Its purpose is to relieve the immediate distress among the Norwegians in Norway who have suffered as a result of the Nazi invasion.
If sufficient funds become available, part of the money will be utilised in rebuilding the shattered homes of the people and assisting them to reconstruct their lives.
The most stringent precautions will be taken to prevent any money subscribed in this country passing into enemy hands.
Admiral Evans has recently returned from Norway, where he had first-hand opportunities of seeing the havoc wrought by the Nazis.
Contributions will be gratefully acknowledged, and should be addressed to Admiral Sir Edward Evans , Norway House, [address removed]
