This is a story of life in 1939 in a famous fishing village at the mouth of the River Tyne and of the ' Cullercoats Fishwives' who, for more than two centuries, have wandered through Northumberland and Durham selling their fish Now, war has nearly emptied their creels and their journeyings are more difficult, but so long as there is fish to be sold, the Cullercoats women will sell it.

Bill and Betty, a brother and sister from London, have been evacuated into the country to stay with Bryan and Bryan's mother. On their first day there they came across an adventure. They met John Bunyan , and climbed the Tall Hill, and rode St. George's horse high above England.
This afternoon Bill and Betty and Bryan are about to have a boat-race in the stream at the bottom of a field, near to Bryan's house. It is a fine, warm afternoon.
