The radiobiography of GEORGE GRAVES
The life story of one of the leading comedians of the English musical-comedy stage with George Graves in person and John Watt as compere
The BBC Revue Chorus and the BBC Variety Orchestra, conducted by Charles Shadwell
Script by Leslie Baily and Howard Thomas. Production by Ronald Waldman
In this, the tenth ' Star-Gazing ' programme, listeners are to have a telcscopic view, with voice and music, of the long, varied, and amazingly successful career of a great English comedian. George Graves made his first big hit as General Marchmont in The School Girl in 1903. But it was as Baron Poport in The Merry Widow that he became known for all time. The ridiculous appearance he assumed, with that bibulous bulbous nose, his ridiculous voice and quips, always brought down the house with laughter.
Listeners are to hear George Graves in excerpts from songs he sang in The Geisha, l'éronique, The Little Michus , The Merry Widow, The Belle of Brittany, Watch Your Step, The Blue Mazurka, Me and My Girl, and many pantomimes. From The Geisha, which he played in in Russia, to Me and My Girl, still running—who has trodden a longer path more successfully in the history of the theatre ?
