He plays a sensitive political researcher in Party Animals (9.00pm BBC2), but Matt Smith (right) missed out on a career that would have guaranteed him higher status. "I was a footballer when I was a teenager and played at Leicester City, Nottingham Forest and Northampton Town," he says. But, in his GCSE year, Smith injured his back and had to give up the sport. With his childhood dream dashed, Smith opted for acting. "In a way, I'm gutted when I think of the house in Hampstead and the Ferrari I could have had but, actually, I think I'm happier being an actor."
