"It's really extreme trying to pay off a mortgage in two years instead of 25," says presenter Rene Carayol (right), who reports back on how well eight householders have done in Did They Pay Off Their Mortgage in Two Years? (7.30pm BBC2). "I wouldn't necessarily recommend it. For one thing, singles can't do it. You need the support of a partner. Even then, boy, is it hard work!" And the results as the deadline approaches? "I'm sure two couples will make it," says Carayol. "But my guess is that none of these people will go back to their old consumer ways."

Better known for his acquaintance with badgers, birds and other denizens of Britain's back gardens, the wildlife presenter takes a different trip with a look at the music, culture and natural history of America. Forty-three years ago Bill toured the States with John Cleese and Tim Brooke-Taylor, but he had no chance to admire the US wildlife. As he attempts to rectify that, his journey begins in New York, where he stumbles upon bin-raiding raccoons and a pair of red-tailed hawks.

This gimmicky new series is notable for the contributions of its presenter, newsreader Fiona Bruce, who reveals herself to be a gigglesome thing with a jaunty sense of humour. And doubtless many of Fiona's male fans will just love hearing her talk rather coquettishly about erections.
The Truth about Food is yet another of those vaguely finger-wagging shows that purports to tell us what we should and should not be eating. It's almost terrifyingly light-hearted, and full of weird experiments. For instance, volunteers live in a zoo and eat like apes for a week to see if their cholesterol levels are reduced. And two game chaps talk about their sexual problems, with gratuitous, but quite funny, illustration from the naughty Cerne Abbas man. (Alison Graham)
