In the future stem cell transplants could offer hope to people with Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy and those who have suffered strokes. But the cells are harvested from embryos and foetuses - raising ethical issues that have led to researchers having their funding cut. With the science largely unproven, the desperately ill seek help in countries with hazy legislation.
