4/6. Disappearances. From the Victorians' "Pepper's Ghost" - in which a ghost would seemingly walk among live actors - to modern TV trickery, appearances and disappearances have been crucial to magic. Here are some of the most impressive "grand illusions", culminating in an effect never before seen on television: American magician Franz Harary tries to make London's
Tower Bridge vanish. Also featuring Paul Daniels. Director Jonny Young : Series producer Kerry Richardson
4/4. Death. Venice's fate hangs in the balance. Since Byron put the city on the tourist map, life has become increasingly hard for the Venetians. But Francesco da Mosto continues to live and raise his children there, though he has seen the dangers the city faces. In the 1966 flood, he was a terrified child watching waters invade his home.
Outrageous modernising ideas also threaten Venice: from bridges linking the city with mainland Italy to flattening churches and converting the Grand Canal into an eight-lane motorway.

Tribute: John Peel Tribute 10.00pm BBC2
Radio Times readers need no reminding of how much John Peel will be missed. For nearly a decade his dry and often personal column was one of the most loved parts of this magazine. But it's as an iconic broadcaster that he'll be best remembered, perhaps the only voice that could ever be equally at home on Radio I and Radio 4.
Final details of this tribute are yet to be confirmed as RT goes to press, but it will include excerpts from 1999s John Peel Night celebrating his 60th birthday, including the documentary Turn That Racket Down. No doubt priceless clips of the plummy young Peel as a DJ in the States will be played one more time. (DB)
