There he meets actor Morgan Freeman who explains why he has moved back to the South. Gates travels to some of the great battlegrounds of the civil rights era: Memphis, Birmingham and Atlanta, where he meets the poet Maya Angelou. But he finds instead of integrating with whites, African-Americans are opting to live among their own.
