The maritime disaster which became one of the best-kept wartime secrets. On 17 June 1940, the British troopship Lancastria was sunk by German bombers as she attempted to evacuate Dunkirk. Over 5,000 men perished yet Churchill believed "the papers have had enough disaster for today" and ordered that the tragedy be hushed up.
